Library Board Minutes

August 11, 2008

4:15 p.m.

 

Members present:  Amalia Olson, Wiletha Eckhardt, Ann Ekse, Wilma Bittinger, and director Eva Gaydon, and Kathy Bailey, City Administrator.

 

Members Absent:  John Huisman, Lennie Clement

 

 

Meeting called to order at 4:20 p.m.

 

Motion to approve previous month’s bills, made by Wilma Bittinger, seconded by Amalia Olson.  Motion Approved.

 

Motion to approve June minutes, made by A. Ekse, seconded by Wilma Bittinger, and approved.

 

Director’s report:  Ms. Gaydon reported that 139 persons enrolled for the summer reading program, with 66 children completing.  A party was given for the kids with books and treats given as prizes.

 

Teen nite was held with $_25__ Barnes and Noble gift cards given to the top three readers,and $_10__Barnes and Noble cards given to the other readers.Pizza and a movie were also enjoyed.

 

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is still looking for members.  A teen book club is also being considered.

 

“Banned Books” were discussed with police tape being placed around the challenged books, which were placed in the stacks.

 

The Library News letter was reviewed.

 

Old Business: 

 

The library budget was reviewed, with various proposed expenditures discussed, including the replacement of ballast in the light fixtures, and the ongoing problem with mold in the basement constituting a possible health hazard.  Ann Ekse will contact Julie Balvance, head of Laboratory Services at United Hospital District, to discuss cultures, and possible remedies.

 

The board is still short a member.  Ms. Gaydon will put an ad in the paper to try to solicit interested parties.

 

Next meeting is September 8, at 4:15 p.m.
